Solve the Problem & Win a Rebello!

21 Sep

Those of you with FACEBOOK accounts, please check your messages.  🙂

UPDATE: This may have been the lecture you went to. (Note comment).

BTW,  one of the primary reasons for the drop in # of posts is because the two Top Posters either don’t post with the frequency they used to or do not post at all anymore.    (See below).

Top Posters

Rank User Name Posts Percent Graph
1 Kat 12967 17%

UPDATE: Contest is closed.  I’ve picked a winner!   Will be posted soon!

UPDATE ALERT: One qualified submission so far – read the latest “Comment” on the right.    Anybody else? tick, toc, tick toc  😉   Please remember,  you must “explain” by solving “the problem”.   Remember, Rebello’s book is the “bible” on all things Lizzie.

Here’s a chance to get a copy of Leonard Rebello’s Lizzie Borden Past & Present absolutely free!  Yep.  Free.  Read on.   This is a highly coveted out-of-print book and prices go as high as $2,000!  Only 900 copies were published back in 1999.  You can read my own review of this book here where there are only two copies available via but they are over $300.  The copy that goes to the winner is in excellent condition with dust jacket and comes autographed by the author!!

What’s the catch, you say?  Well, all you have to do is identify what the statistics on the grid below represent and write a one paragraph (5 sentence minimum) explanation of why the numbers have so radically declined.  First person to submit the correct answer to the grid and the one paragraph explanation solving “the problem” will get the book PLUS a surprise bonus from my collection!  Winner will be judged on accuracy of explanation.

This is a limited time offer so you better hurry!   🙂

    Hi Faye,

The statistics are from the Lizzie Borden Society Forum (

I assume the decrease is because Dr. Stefani Koorey is now a paid professional speaker on matters relating to Lizzie Borden. She may be discouraging the use of the “free” forum and not contributing information. Why give away the information for free if you can charge for it.

Further she is now involved with the “Mass Humanities'” program and “Every House Has A Story” program. I think her interest in Lizzie Borden has waned since her move to Fall River and hence she is devoting less time to the Lizzie Borden Society Forum.

I don’t think the move to Fall River made her the preminent authority on Lizzie Borden or a Fall River heroine, which is probably what she expected. Also, it probably hasn’t been as lucrative as expected.

Finally, she may have antagonized some of the local citizenry in Fall River which has led to a decline in the popularity of the Lizzie Borden Society Forum.

This is all speculation on my part, but I think it makes sense.

    Hi Faye,

Please condsider this to be an addition to my reply of September 21. If you look at the “Posts Per Month” for the Lizzie Borden Forum (LBF), there was a large incrase in postings during the period August 2006 through January 2007. Some of this was apparently spam. Then on April 5, 2007, the moderator or the LBF announced she would start “screening” new members (presumably to eliminate spam). Thereafter the number of postings declined significanlty. Also, in April, 2007, a major contributer known as “Ray S”, stopped posting messages on April 18, 2007. Ray was the 6th largest contributor to the LBF and accounted for 3.4% of the messages. I don’t know if Ray was “banned” or whether he just decided to no longer be a contributor. And finally, there was another major decrease in message on the LBF starting in November 2008 for reasons that are not clear. In summary (in addition to my previous message), I think the reason for the decrease in messages on the LBF is due to the screening of new members, the loss of “Ray S”, and a declining interest in Lizzie Borden (the topic is getting a little old).

Grid is from the LizzieBorden Forum statistics.

The numbers have pulmetted for most all the reasons stated by the other two posters except there are otehr “MIA” posters who could be named. One has to look back a a year or so. Cant fault the moderator if peoople edon’t wsign up but maybe the site should be promoteed more instead of just the moderqator. I have looked at the content and it is great info for researcdhing. I think most people just want to ask a quick question. Ge3t in. Get out.

    Statistics from:, Lizzie Borden Forum/Statistics

The obvious explanation is that less than 10% of the people posting previously are posting now. The number of posts by individuals has dropped compared to what it was a few months ago. As a regular “lurker” of the forum, and a long time user of the comments/findings in the various topics and threads, I have to say I miss the “old days” when it was much more lively. The moderator, Stefani Koorey has done little to interact and take ownership. It seems she does use it as a platform to tout her own appearances. (And to Mr. Judson she hasn’t been paid for her speaking/presetations even if she does say she gets $1500 a lecture – plus exenses – on her website.) The forum is a little rigid for my taste. Not much humor because people are so self-restrained to be socially, politically correct. A little loosening up might encourage others to join. I agree with Melinda who said time is being used up on social networking sites. It seems this Stefani is so worried about spam but none of the other forums (on any topics) that I know of that use the same platform have any spam problem. She probably just wants to make sure a certain kind of people get membership. Maybe the elitism keeps people away? Over 500 members and less than a dozen who both to post doesn’t sound very successful to me. Didn’t this all start going down hill when she moved to Fall River? A body would think that would have helped getting *more* members. And where’s the Hatchet she publishes online? That has gone downhill too and appears to be dying off. No contributors? No interest? No money to pay writers? Hey, this is beginning to sound like a brand new mystery!

Faye: My submission went missing so I am resending.

The statistics are posted just like that grid on the “Lizzie Borden Society Forum” site in the “Statistics” section. (You have to scroll down).
People who used to post all the time haven’t been posting. They used to post hundreds of times a week. Social media such as Facebook and Twitter are taking up peoples time that might have been spent posting on chat forums like this. The administrator’s (Stefani Koorey) popularity has subsided because members are turned off by her constant promoting of herself. She seems to only post on her own forum when there’s something about her in the paper. Another reason is that the forum is not easy to sign up on and people want to do it quickly or not at all. Another reason is that the few regular members who post are so much experts that other members are scared to contribute afraid they might look stupid. If the “problem” is that the postings are down then the “solution” would be to have more people joining and posting and sharing information.
    So how’d I do

WOW! I wish I had seen this sooner. I don’t have a Rebello but have used the one in our library. Its a huge book, about 700 pages and is the best reference about this lizzie and this case. I was a member of the Lizzie Borden forum for a short while and even posted a few times. I joined because when we were on vacation in New England we visited the Borden house, historical society, the cemetery and even got to listen to ms. koorey at a lecture put on by the Friends of the Fall River Library. It was free and was really good and so I thought I would join the forum. I was shy about posting because it seemed the members were all so informed experts on the case. They spent alot of time in what my husband calls “dissecting minutia”. Maybe that’s why new members don’t join and old members have fallen off and postings have declined? I still visit the site but I don’t get much new information as I do here. I am also very much looking forward to the Fall River Historical Society’s new book “Parallel Lives – Lizzie Borden’s Fall River”. Once more, I’m really sorry I didn’t see this in time to compete for the book. Whoever gets it, boy are you lucky! I can’t afford to buy one and the Parallel Lives book both.
