I have begun consulting your blog, and see your offer of a copy of the transcript of the Lizzie Borden preliminary (probable-cause) hearing. I would like to take you up on that generous offer. I have spoken here on Cape Cod on the Webster/Parkman and Sacco and Vanzetti cases, and will be presenting a talk on Lizzie Borden on a couple of occasions coming up. . . .

Thank you for your kindness in this matter.

I appreciate your efforts in providing this transcript. I recently finished reading the full trial transcript from the summer of 1893. I would like to compare the prelim to see how certain witnesses’ stories changed. I have a new book coming out this year on the “tragedy.”
    Thank you so much.

Didnt see where I could post comment so hopefully this will work. I honestly love reading and learning about true crimes. I read an article that said the home Lizzie Borden passed away in is up for sale. So I googled her name and this site was the one that seemed the most interesting. Needless to say I have not been disappointed!

When I was a teenager I watched Legend of Lizzie on a VHS tape on a sleepover. It really creeped us girls out and I wanted to learn more about what happened to her. I have been reading books ever since. I have been watching documentaries ever since. Last year I read the Witness Statements. I would very much like to have the Preliminary Hearing. Thank you, Ms. Musselman.

I like to look up photos of (possibly) real characters and read about them as I watch films. I was watching the new Lizzie Borden stories on Netflix, did the searches and followed links around. I know you flamed the series, but really, don’t we all know it’s fiction with little nuggets of possible truth sprinkled about?

Why are the theories about incest, or being discovered self-pleasuring, or any other exotic motives for the murders – why are these stories advanced lately (ie the 90’s onward) by self-identified experts more legitimate than the outright fictions of the new series? Where’s the foundation?? Even back in her time, how does anyone know the prurient stuff wasn’t just creepy gossip?

Sure, this rotten stuff happened in life, but where’s the proof it happened in Lizbeth Borden’s life? So, it’s better to read the source material, not just the summaries, just can’t always get to them. I still have to finish reading your posts, maybe you’ve already debunked this stuff, but I thank you.

Hi! Your site is one of a kind!! =) I lived in Fall River briefly when I went to visit a friend who moved there from CT. and I ended up staying a while. We were walking distance from Lizzie’s house, and her church was across the street from where we were staying. However I’ve been fascinated by her since childhood. Growing up in New England, my mother told me the tale and even as a young’un, the macabre had a hold on me. I feel for Lizzie and feel a connection with her. I would very much like to have a preliminary. Thank you!!

I would appreciate a copy of the transcript. A relative of my Fall River Grandfather’s (a Lubinsky who could hardly speak English) is said to have testified at the Trial–for the Defense. He claimed that he saw Lizzie walking calmly back to the house from the “barn.” One book says that this unnamed witness was an ice cream man. I wonder if my relative sold ice cream for a living in a country where he was ESL. We only learned of this connection in the 21st century, when my mother’s Durfee High School class was planning its 50th reunion. Thank you in advance for your help!

OMG! That was 3 weeks into my research on Lizzie. Total Rookie Mistake! But I stuck with it day & night and I’m still in love with it a year later. I am finishing up recording the Witness Statements at a local radio station. When that’s been edited I hope to begin rehearsals for the intense Inquest showdown between Lizzie & Knowlton. Wow! Hang on to your granny chair girls; it’s going to be a bumpy ride. Can’t wait to send you the finished product. Kate Lavender, Portland, Oregon.

      February 2, 2018 at 3:32 PM

Hi Peggy! How’s that screenplay coming? I wrote one too and I took it to the Writer’s Convention in August 2017 and they said,”Nobody wants another Lizzie Borden movie.” They are so wrong! Nobody wants another Fictionalized movie like the new “Lizzie” out Jan 18, 2018. My advice to you is “don’t pitch your movie to a male producer.” So I’m recording the primary source documents portrayed by voice actors at a local radio station. You can follow my exploits on Facebook. Kate Lavender, Lizzie Borden Screenwriter, Portland, Oregon.

I am fascinated by the case and, if Lizzie Borden truly wasn’t a killer, then she is owed a voice – and the right to be exonerated.

I first became aware of Lizzie when I was like 13 years old. I honestly began hearing the famous verse in my head but it was incomplete. A call to our local Library opened a whole new world to me. I believe in past lives and while I can’t say I was Lizzie Borden, I do beludve I lived at that time and may have even known Lizzie. Been to Fall River 3 times and stayed at the House twice, both times in Lizzie’s room. Never have read the Hearing and looking forward to it!

Hi Faye. I first got interested in the Lizzie case when I read Victoria Lincoln’s A PRIVATE DISGRACE not too long after it was published (I was living in New Orleans, now I’m in NYC). Over the years I’ve acquired many of the main books on the subject though not all. Cara Robertson got me interested all over again when I read her recent book, sending me back to the floor plans of the Borden house; then I re-read A PRIVATE DISGRACE! enjoying it as much the second time all these years later. I first visited Fall River in 1972 and returned several times after that, finally getting to tour the B&B about 1998 (a true thrill after all my reading, as you can imagine). I hope to stay overnight there one of these days. I also attended the 1992 centenary of the crime, though not the seminar part of it. I was in seventh heaven mixing with all those Borden enthusiasts milling about. Thanks in advance if you send me the pdf transcript!

I never have before now, but, honestly, I find myself feeling awfully sad for the life they lived. Reading that letter from the next generation cousins about the party and the costumes, reading further that they had probably passed maple…house coming or going, the events surrounding the excising of each sister from their life’s , their mother’s death, the fact that, from what I’m reading, being a “Borden” in Fall River carried a significant cache that Lizzie nor Emma ever had, despite name. I have nieces now grown, who lost mother in their teens, and witnessed the breadth of heartbreak and impact that brings teenage girls. I think Emma must have been so depressed, and not knowing much about the father, only knowing the era, it must have been hell for Emma, , and worse yet, to be usurped of all her”work, responsibilities, identification, “ when Abbie suddenly arrived. Emma was mid late teens, that must have tore her heart up on so many levels. It
Replaces the mother Emma knew, and I have never read their relationship health, but I’m assuming Emma must have loved her mom. Then Abbie is there, Lizzie has absolutely no memory of her mother. I imagine Emma hated Abbie, and I do not like that word, but how could she not. Abbie made little effort in rebuilding a decimated family. Abbie did Abbie, and no, she didn’t deserve an ax in her skull!
Abbie was said to be unattractive, overweight , “older woman, unmarried spinster,” who, although came from a “ good “ family name, it had fallen on hard times. When she understood THE ANDREW BORDEN might be seeking her skills, I can’t imagine there wasn’t a person she didn’t run down to get that marriage over and done. and did everything she could to make something permanent.
Emma also lost a sister and Lizzie was her sole connection, literally, to a mother gone too soon. Lizzie knew only Abbie, interesting the suspect was the sister “ raised” by her step mom. I would like to think that Lizzie had a great sense of humor and understood the ridiculous in others, but I have no idea. She was left by that town as a pariah. She stopped going to the center church, and she began to think people were whispering about her. Something kept her inFallRiver, which for the life of me, I will never understand lt could be that she wouldn’t leave because of what she had done? Emma finally got out of Dodge, and even in her will, her wording for Lizzie is evocative of meaning, not just a transaction( how I read it) and Lizzie’s Stipulation on Emma in her will was completely devoid of anything That would have illustrated the generosity Emma had given to Lizzie her whole life. The split between the two, I think was a reckoning of responsibility, and Emma left, still loving her sister, but, could
no longer be a quiet chaperone to her current and past acts. I do think Lizzie killed them both. I have absolutely no idea how she had the steel to pull it off as quickly as she did, and I believe it was an act of ragefull injustice. I’m not an expert, I’m not a Lizzie scholar, I am absolutely fascinated by her, and cannot believe I just wrote War and Peace….sorry, got me interested!!,

    Hi Faye

I appear to have an unhealthy (?) fascination with unsolved murders – I recently spent three weeks in London trying to solve (no luck) a minor problem they had around the time of the Borden affair (Jack the Ripper). I have enjoyed your website and would like to read more of the real life commentary/statements made at the time. if you are still willing to send the transcript I promise to read it!!

    Thanks

I watched the Lizzie movie starring Elizabeth Montgomery when I was 12 and I was hooked. I started reading all the books I had access to when the Arnold Brown book came out in 1992. I have done interlibrary loan on many of the books I have read, I think our librarian thought it odd that I kept requesting sooo many!! Love all things Lizzie!!

Hello there! I highly doubt that I will recieve this in time for my lessons over the next few days and weeks, but it is worth a try! I became interested in Lizzy Borden after completing an argument lesson with my junior English classes and seeing their engagement levels (so I decided that I wanted to have them use this story/evidence/trial to begin practice using and developing arguments). I would really like to begin a mock trial with my students as well, so something like this transcript would be extremely helpful! Thanks in advance!

I became interested in Lizzie Borden from watching the 1974 TV movie The Legends of alizzie Borden with my favorite TV witch Elizabeth Montgomery. After, I was fascinated on how a woman of her era was able to pull it off on a hot August day in 1892. Emma, her sister, must have had some knowledge about the crime, why else was she in fair haven? The case is still creating conversty to this day. Hence, is why I am highly interested in reading the court transcript to see what other details about her, about Emma, Bridget ,and the going one the day of the crime.
